“I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country. VICTORY OR DEATH.”

These inspiring words were written by Lt. Col. William Travis in an open letter To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World on February 24, 1836, just 10 days before the Battle of the Alamo. Serving as co-commander of the Alamo mission along with Col. James Bowie, Travis fought and died for the cause of Texas independence alongside roughly 200 Texians and other volunteers, including famed frontiersman Davy Crockett.

Realizing that Gen. Santa Anna’s Mexican army totaled more than 3,000 trained soldiers, Travis reportedly gathered his small band of freedom fighters together the night before the attack and gave them a choice. They could stay and fight – which would mean almost certain death – or they could flee the fort under the cover of darkness. History records that only one man broke ranks and fled the mission. The rest stayed and fought… and died like men.

Fast forward to August 2025 in the State of Texas.

Beneath the shadow of the Alamo, 51 Democratic state legislators have fled the state to deny the Republican majority a quorum rather than stand and fight for their beliefs, leaving behind their constituents who are still reeling from last month’s catastrophic floods. Their reasoning? Staying and fighting would almost certainly mean that some of Texas’ congressional districts would be reconfigured, potentially costing Democrats as many as five House seats in the 2026 midterm elections.

And so, rather than suffer defeat on the floor of the state capitol, they hopped on planes and fled to the safety and security of deep blue states like Illinois and New York, comically claiming that they hold the moral high ground while conveniently forgetting that both of those states – along with Connecticut, Massachusetts, and other bastions of liberalism – have been engaging in gerrymandering for generations.

So, let me get this right. It’s O.K. to carve out safe Democratic districts in solidly blue states, robbing Republican voters of equal (or any) congressional representation, but it is a threat to democracy for Republicans to finally wake up and play the same game.

What a bunch of cowards, hypocrites, and sore losers!

Meanwhile, William Travis, James, Bowie, and Davy Crockett are rolling over in their graves.
