What I Am Looking For In a Republican Candidate

With the 2022 midterm elections right around the corner – at least in political terms – and potential candidates already positioning themselves for the 2024 presidential campaign, I thought it prudent to make a list of the qualities and characteristics I am looking for in a Republican candidate. Not only for the big prize, the White House, but also for political offices whose mailing address is not 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

And so, in no particular order (except for #1), here is my personal Top 10…

1. Have some core values.

2. Be able to articulate those values from your heart as well as your head. You shouldn’t need a teleprompter or a speechwriter to tell your fellow Americans what things matter most to you… and why you are running for office.

3. Stand up for what you believe and refuse to compromise on your core beliefs (which had better include being Pro-Life, Pro-2A, Pro-Israel, and Pro-Military/National Defense/Border Security). However, don’t be a jerk about it. Learn from Ronald Reagan and remember that honey attracts more flies than vinegar.

4. Revisit George W. Bush’s “compassionate conservatism” without coming across as a wuss.

5. Don’t just say you are a fiscal conservative… BE ONE! Push for a Balanced Budget Amendment - and then push again. Harder, this time.

6. Wear your patriotism on your sleeve. The same goes for your religious faith. Despite what the Progressives, Hollywood, and the mainstream media would have you believe, America needs more of God, not less.

7. Don’t brag. Instead, share the credit for your accomplishments with others. Americans like humility… or at least they should.

8. Paint your vision for America with bold, bright colors. Try red, white, and blue for starters.

9. Be optimistic. We already have too many pessimists – and too much negativism – in government. Convey a “together, we can do anything” attitude. It certainly worked for “the Gipper”!

10. WIN. In other words, outwork, out-think, and out-maneuver your opponent. Do whatever it takes – legally and ethically – to come out on top. The future of our republic hangs in the balance, so don’t pull a Mitt Romney, circa 2012. Go for the jugular and when your opponent is down, step on his neck. Politics isn’t for sissies.
