When Will the GOP Grow a Spine?

It happens every time…

Just like Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown as he attempts to kick it for the umpteenth time. Only instead of sending the ol’ pigskin into orbit, ever-trusting Chuck winds up flat on his back while Lucy chuckles at her duplicity… and Charlie Brown’s gullibility.

And that, my friend, is what happens every time the Republicans get into power.

When there is a Democrat in the White House and the party of Clinton, Obama, and Biden controls both houses of Congress, they work in unison to advance a liberal agenda and jam it down America’s throat. But give the Republicans the same opportunity and they squabble and splinter and get virtually nothing done.

Meanwhile, conservative voters get duped… again.

Forget about all those campaign promises to slash the deficit and pay down the debt. On the stump, they assured us they would take an axe to the budget but once in power, they pulled out a pair of nail clippers instead.

It turns out that the Republicans like pork just as much as the Democrats… and have far less stomach for a fight.

Either the Republicans on Capitol Hill are too timid to get the job done or they were never really fiscal conservatives to begin with. All it took was a little negative press and some pushback from voters back home, and the GOP folded like a house of cards.

Instead of explaining to their constituents that some short-term pain is necessary when you are $37 trillion in debt and are mortgaging your grandchildren’s future, the Republicans have opted to kick the proverbial can down the road for the next Congress to deal with... and then the one after that.

That’s called being financially irresponsible. It’s also called cowardice.

Here is the simple truth: reducing the deficit still adds to the debt. And our national debt will continue to increase until and unless we stop spending more than we take in.

It’s not rocket science. It’s simple math.

Patriots with principles understand that. Cowards and career politicians do not.

Something tells me that if the GOP – after begging voters to give them total control of the executive and legislative branches of government – screws up this time, they will pay for it dearly in the 2026 midterm elections… and perhaps for many years to come.

If and when that happens, Republicans will have no one to blame but themselves.
