When Will True Justice Prevail?

There are times when I feel just like King David…
No, I’ve never tended sheep and no, I’ve never slain a giant. And I most certainly haven’t led a nation into battle, returning victoriously each and every time.
However, I can certainly identify with the Shepherd King when it comes to some of the temptations he faced as well as some of the things that he questioned God about. Take Psalm 73, for instance.
David spends the better part of the psalm lamenting how the wicked seemingly prosper despite the evil things they say and the evil things they do. Meanwhile, David says, “I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocence.”
What David is complaining about is the apparent injustice of this world. Those who seek to lead godly lives often dwell in relative poverty and obscurity whereas those who “flip God the bird” are seemingly rewarded with fame, fortune, and good health.
But then comes David’s “Aha!” moment in verse 17 which simply states, “Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I understood their end.”
I think about that verse every time I read a newspaper article or hear a news report about someone rich and powerful getting away with doing something illegal or immoral (or both). Yes, something which you and I would probably be arrested and imprisoned for.
And yet, these folks seem to get off Scot-free every time. Here are just a few examples…
Bill Clinton sexually assaulted multiple women and yet, got elected president (twice). And even after perjuring himself during the Monica Lewinsky affair – where was the #MeToo movement when he used his power and position to seduce a 22-year-old White House intern? – “Slick Willie” was found not guilty by the Senate and retired to his mansion in Chappaqua to enhance his net worth via outlandish speaking fees to the tune of $245 million.
Oh, and President Obama thought Bill was deserving of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, our nation’s highest civilian award, in 2013.
Then there’s Hillary “What difference at this point does it make” Clinton, who not only intentionally destroyed more than 33,000 emails that had been subpoenaed by Congress, but also ordered U.S. fighter jets stationed one-hour-away in Sicily to “stand down” while U.S. Marines fought valiantly for their lives on a Benghazi rooftop. Undaunted and unfazed, Hillary had the audacity to run for president in 2016 citing her vast foreign policy experience.
Thankfully, Hillary lost in one of the biggest upsets in modern American political history… although she still claims – nine years later – that the election was stolen from her.
Which brings us to Adam “Shifty” Schiff.
As ranking member and later chairman of the House Select Intelligence Committee (a misnomer if there ever was one), Schiff told anyone and everyone willing to listen that he had definitive proof of Russian collusion in the 2016 presidential election.
Unfortunately for Adam, it turns out that not only didn’t he have any proof, but he had also concocted a web of lies every step of the way in an attempt to derail Donald Trump’s presidency. As a result, on June 21, 2023, the House of Representatives censured Schiff in a party-line vote for promoting the "conspiracy theory" that Trump colluded with Russia and for purposely misleading the American public with "falsehoods, misrepresentations and abuses of sensitive information" about the 2016 presidential election.
A mere slap on the wrist for Schiff who was promptly rewarded for his duplicity by California voters who elected him to the U.S. Senate in November 2024.
Sadly, it’s not just politicians who lie, cheat, and steal… and seemingly get away with it. It is celebrities, too.
Just last week, Sean “Puffy” Combs was found not guilty on the five more serious charges that could have put him behind bars for the rest of his life. Despite compelling evidence and personal testimony from witnesses whom Combs drugged and coerced to engage in his “freak off” sex parties, somehow a jury of eight men and four women found the rapper and music mogul innocent of sex trafficking and racketeering, but guilty on two lesser counts of transportation to engage in prostitution that carry a maximum penalty of 10 years each minus time already served.
Reportedly, when Combs returned to jail to await his sentencing hearing, he was greeted with a standing ovation from his fellow inmates. Good grief!
Then there is Bryan Kohberger, the 30-year-old former PhD student of criminology, who was accused of brutally murdering four University of Idaho students in cold blood on November 13, 2022… and then vehemently denied it for the past 30 months.
Until, that is, the prosecution blinked and offered to take the death penalty off the table. Kohberger, guilty as sin, seized the opportunity to save his wretched life and publicly admitted his guilt in court after tying up the judicial system for the past 962 days.
“Are you pleading guilty because you are guilty?” Judge Steven Hippler asked.
“Yes,” Kohlberger replied.
And so, he will receive 10 years for burglary, and four consecutive life sentences at taxpayers’ expense while the families of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen get a degree of closure, but no revenge.
Tragically, there are far too many other examples to cite in such limited space, but thankfully there is room for a couple of Bible passages that put it all into proper – and eternal – perspective.
“Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody.
If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone. Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: ‘Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.’ On the contrary, ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. For in so doing, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:17-21 (BSB)
“But because of your hard and unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. God ‘will repay each one according to his deeds.’ To those who by perseverance in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality, He will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow wickedness, there will be wrath and anger.” Romans 2:5-8 (BSB)
Scripture speaks extensively on this subject but suffice it to say that unless they repent and turn in saving faith to Jesus Christ, Bill, Hillary, Adam, Sean, and Bryan will face a Day of Reckoning where true justice will be meted out… and the same goes for the rest of us.
That’s a comforting thought for some and a terrifying thought for others.
