Why Capital Punishment Is a Pro-Life Position
Monday, October 6, 2025
I can’t believe that I am publicly disagreeing with Pope Leo XIV twice in one week.
On Monday, I questioned the pontiff’s comments to reporters in which he said that you can’t be pro-life if you support the “inhuman treatment of immigrants who are in the United States.” With all due respect, arresting and deporting immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally – and in many cases, committed secondary crimes while here – is not inhumane. On the contrary, it is simply a matter of maintaining law and order, which is exactly the purpose for which God instituted government.
“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.” Romans 13:1-4 (NKJV)
In other words, obey the laws of the land and the government will leave you alone. Break those laws – like crossing into another country illegally – and expect to suffer the consequences.
It’s really not that complicated, Your Holiness. Just let the Bible be your guide and not your political leanings.
In that same interview, Pope Leo said the following…
“Someone who says, ‘I’m against abortion’ but says, ‘I’m in favor of the death penalty,’ is not really pro-life.”
I invite you – and Pope Leo – to go back and reread the Bible passage above. Notice in the last sentence what the Apostle Paul wrote about the role of rulers. They are God’s ministers, he said, whose responsibility it is to act as an avenger by executing wrath against evildoers.
Sounds like an endorsement of capital punishment to me!
If a society truly values life, then executing someone who purposely takes a life in a premeditated fashion is a public declaration and demonstration of that value. The guilty party has forfeited his life by taking the life of an innocent party… and it is the responsibility of the government to carry out that sentence.
Sentencing someone who is guilty of first-degree murder to life imprisonment – or in many cases, something less – diminishes the severity of their crime. They took a L-I-F-E that didn’t belong to them and that life was precious. So precious, in fact, that allowing the perpetrator to live while the innocent victim decomposes in their grave is an assault on human decency and undermines the very sanctity of life itself.
Last week, Sunny Hostin, one of the co-hosts of the Progressive propaganda program masquerading as a midday talk show called The View, defended Pope Leo’s comments with her own mind-numbing logic.
“I find there is a hypocrisy with certain Christians who are ‘pro-life’, but they will pull that electric chair switch,” Hostin said when pressed by co-host Joy Behar. “They are ‘pro-life’ but they have their AR-15s in their cabinet.”
Oh, I get it now, Sunny. We should let murderers live to a ripe old age while, at the same time, allowing criminals to invade our homes without fighting back to protect our family and our property.
In what kind of parallel universe do you live, Sunny? I mean, we already know that Pope Leo lives in a walled city that is protected by 135 armed guards, but I’m willing to bet that you also have a sophisticated home security system and a personal bodyguard (or two) who carries a handgun (or two) 24/7. After all, you and your orthopedic surgeon husband live in a mansion in the tiny hamlet of Purchase, NY, which Bloomberg lists as the fifth wealthiest zip code in America.
So, yes, Sunny, I am one of those pro-life people who will use my Second Amendment rights to defend my loved ones. And yes, Sunny, I am also one of those pro-life people who will pull the electric chair switch to send a cold-blooded killer to his eternal reward.
Just give me a Bible and an hour alone with him first, so I have a chance to lead him to saving faith in Christ before his sentence is carried out.
